Kirk Chewning & David Johnson of St. Croix financial services firm Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP continue to sponsor the week-long sailing and life skills experiential educational program for St. Croix’s Ricardo Richards School program.
Jan. 29, 2015 – Christiansted, USVI – St. Croix financial services company, Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP, and the World Ocean School have teamed up again to offer St. Croix’s Ricardo Richards Middle School students a unique educational experience.
Cane Bay Partners – at the direction of its partners Kirk Chewning and David Johnson — donated the funds to provide the educational sailing program at no cost to the students of the Ricardo Richards School.
The week-long program inspires the students with academically-tied experiential programs aboard the National Historic Landmark Schooner Roseway, according to Abby Kidder, President and Co-Founder of the World Ocean School Aboard the Roseway.
For many students, their first step aboard the Roseway is their first step onto a boat of any kind. During the educational program, they work together to raise the 2,000 pound sail and navigate the 90-year-old, 260-ton sailboat.
“If the kids don’t work together, the sail does not go up,” Kidder said. “Everyone involved has a real and immediate impact on sailing this boat. She is authentic and the kids respond to that.”
The benefit of this authentic experience made perfect sense to Cane Bay Partners leadership.
“We see tremendous value in the life skills this program offers our Virgin Island students,” said Chewning. “Communication, team-building, trust and the value of self-worth are integral components of the week-long lesson plan. That’s why we continue to support the Roseway program and encourage others to do the same.”
This weekend the World Ocean School holds its annual St. Croix fundraiser to support all of its experiential education programs.
The Roarin’ Roseway Gala and Patron’s Events take placethis Friday and Saturday (January 30-31). The two-day event kicks off with a Sold-Out sail aboard the historic schooner on Friday night and finishes with a Sold-Out 1920’s-themed gala at the Ha’Penny Club Saturday night. “St. Croix’s students are the building blocks our island’s future,” Johnson said. “Cane Bay Partners will continue to seek out opportunities like the Roseway program to enhance and expand their educational opportunities.”
