Christiansted, USVI – Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP Co-CEOs Kirk Chewning and David A. Johnson on Monday congratulated Junior Achievement Virgin Islands on the success of their inaugural golf tournament held Feb. 29 at Carambola Golf Club.

Cane Bay Partners VI was one of the local sponsors of the golf tournament. Chewning was among the participants of the Junior Achievement Golf Classic and also serves as vice chair of the JAUSVI Board.

“It was a great event, and it really got everyone excited about supporting the work Junior Achievement does,” Chewning said. “The funds raised during the tournament will go a long way in supporting the organization’s operating budget and future expansion.”

The 18-hole tournament included 18, four-member, randomly placed teams. First, second and third place winners in the gross and net score categories received custom trophies by Mitchell Larsen Studios, and other participants won gift cards for an online golf store and local handmade jewelry. During the luncheon after the tournament, entertainment was provided by 13-year-old steel pan player Kevin Williams of Kevs Pan Vibes. Directly after that, off-island visitors were treated to a sail aboard the historic schooner Roseway.

“It was a fantastic day, we had a great time,” JAUSVI Executive Director Albert Bryan Jr. said. “Everyone was really impressed by the tournament and the golf course.”

The McCarthy & Holthus LLP team, accompanied by local residents Doug and Mae Menzies, won the first prize. Erika Scott, assistant attorney general at the VI Department of Justice, won the women’s long drive contest, and visiting player Brian Zylinski won the men’s long drive contest.

The primary goals of the event were to increase awareness of the local Junior Achievement program among potential corporate sponsors, and to raise funds to support an expansion of the program, according to Bryan. Bryan hopes this and other fundraising efforts will result in an increase of students impacted by Junior Achievement from 7 to 20 percent of the local school population.

“Our fundraising goals were surpassed and this will go a long way toward expanding our programs offered to Virgin Islands students,” Bryan said, adding that the event helped them pick up additional corporate sponsors.

The tournament was conceived by Chewning and Patrick Cox, also a member of the Junior Achievement VI Board. The event coincided with an annual legal conference, which brought 40 to 50 attorneys and their support staff to St. Croix, according to JAUSVI Executive Director Albert Bryan.

“This tournament was a tremendous success because of our sponsors who have already committed to the second annual golf classic,” Bryan said. “They are proving the funding for programs at JA Virgin Islands. These programs provide valuable lessons in planning, financial literacy and entrepreneurship that will help create better lives for students for years to come. The most important thing it teaches them about the future is the need to plan for it.”

Cane Bay Partners is committed to supporting local educational initiatives. In addition to Junior Achievement, the company also supports the Territorial Scholarship Fund, the Roseway World Ocean School, the Boys and Girls Club of the Virgin Islands, the Boy Scouts and various programs at local public, private and parochial schools on St. Croix.

“Junior Achievement is such an ideal organization to support,” Cane Bay Partners Co-CEO David A. Johnson said. “They have a great mission, a great group of people involved and they are doing wonderful work providing the youth of the Virgin Islands with financial literacy skills.”
